What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) uses a pressurized chamber to deliver high-concentration oxygen into a confined space (the air pressure in the confined space is higher than normal atmospheric pressure) to assist in regulating the body.

Since the partial pressure of oxygen in blood is much lower than that of the atmosphere, and the partial pressure of oxygen in organs is much lower than that of blood, oxygen is always transported smoothly along "atmosphere → arterial blood → tissues and organs"; the more obvious the difference in oxygen partial pressure, the greater the oxygen transport The more active.

This allows your lungs to collect more oxygen than breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

How does HBOT work?

HBOT helps wound healing by bringing oxygen-rich plasma to tissue starved for oxygen. Wound injuries damage the body's blood vessels, They release fluid that leaks into the tissues and causes swelling. This swelling deprives the damaged cells of oxygen, and tissue starts to die. HBOT reduces swelling while flooding the tissues with oxygen. The higher pressure in the chamber increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. HBOT aims to break the cycle of swelling, oxygen starvation, and tissue death.

HBOT prevents "reperfusion injury." This is the severe tissue damage that happens when the blood supply returns to the tissues after they have been deprived of oxygen. Blood flow can be interrupted by a crush injury, for instance. If this happens, a series of events inside the damaged cells leads to the release of harmful oxygen radicals. These molecules can do damage to tissues that can't be reversed. They cause the blood vessels to clamp up and stop blood flow. HBOT encourages the body's oxygen radical scavengers to seek out the problem molecules and let healing continue.

HBOT helps block the action of harmful bacteria and strengthens the body's immune system. HBOT can disable the toxins of certain bacteria. It also increases oxygen concentration in the tissues. This helps them resist infection. And the therapy improves the ability of white blood cells to find and destroy invaders.

HBOT encourages the formation of new collagen and new skin cells. It does so by encouraging new blood vessels to grow. It also stimulates cells to make certain substances, like vascular endothelial growth factor. These attract and stimulate endothelial cells needed for healing.

Did you know your body is starved of oxygen?

Human oxygen uptake capacity decreases with age, at an average rate of 2% per year for men and 2.5% per year for women.

Hypoxia in the human body and damage to the body will stimulate the production of oxygen free radicals, and hypoxia is

an important factor in many diseases.

The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine revealed that cells are sensitive to the oxygen content of their environment.

Under hypoxic conditions, a molecule called hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) increases, leading to changes in the expression of

more than 300 genes.

Prompts cells to switch to a completely different metabolic mode than the oxygen-rich state.

Hypoxia can activate the HIF signaling pathway, leading to multiple changes:

• Cellular level: HIF promotes multiple gene expression changes related to metabolism, cell survival or death, leading to

changes in cell survival patterns, insufficient energy (ATP) supply, and increased generation of harmful free radicals (ROS);

• At the body level: long-term hypoxia leads to an increase in the level of chronic inflammation throughout the body,

accelerating inflammatory aging and the progression of chronic diseases; chronic inflammation repeatedly stimulates the

immune system, causing immune disorders; for tumor patients, the lesion environment with long-term hypoxia is more

harmful. Helps cancer cells survive and migrate, and accelerates disease progression.

As an auxiliary method for surgical or drug intervention, HBOT can accelerate the healing of carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, stubborn wounds and tissue hypoxic infections, and can also assist in the treatment of severe anemia, intracranial abscess, necrotizing soft tissue infection, etc.

During HBOT, when cabin air pressure rises or falls, it can cause a fullness in your ears, similar to what you might experience on an airplane or at high altitude. You can relieve this feeling by yawning, swallowing, pinching your nose more often, or chewing gum.

HBOT usually lasts about 1-2 hours and may require multiple treatments to achieve the desired results. The number of sessions you need will depend on your specific condition and its severity.
